A New Currency in St. Louis will be a part of the global impact of this world-wide exhibition, under the direction of Dan Cameron (Prospect New Orleans), we will join cities such as Los Angeles, D.C., Seoul and Taipei, to explore the current trends and feelings of artists in each city. Opening on June 26^th, 7 – 10 pm at Snowflake/Citystock, the exhibition will feature the art of several young St. Louis artists who are working to make a career in this tough economy.

Works by Nate Chung, Eric Hall and Jennifer Wilkey are a few of the artists that are featured in the exhibition.

CHANGE IS SO MONEY RIGHT NOW

From the dawn of time to the grade school lunch table, man is long familiar with the system of exchange. But somewhere along the way we all found ourselves with a bag of Fritos in our hands and no one willing to relinquish their Snack Pack. So as the capitalist society we were born into dictates, we all went out and got jobs. Why? Because jobs equal money and money equals Snack Packs. Now in the midst of a worldwide recession our none-too-full pockets have gotten tighter and tighter. So tight in fact that our greedy little fingers have a hard time getting in there and we are forced to cut back on our Snack Pack intake. But what of that surplus of Fritos sitting in the corner? Surely their must be someone with a hoard of pudding, dying for a savory, salty treat.

A small group of artists, familiar with the lunchroom trade culture, have a strong awareness of our currenct economic climate and a desire to somehow alter or at least rethink the relationship that art has to currency. They have materialized their desire into an exhibit and a phenomenon called A New Currency. Curator Dan Cameronand 31 School of Visual Arts students have started the project at the local level and will be expanding into virtue and global realms. The idea is to create "a model for applying art's experimental methods to a fundamentally entrepreneurial task: rethinking art's relationship to systems of exchange."

At 55 Delancey Street, students have garnered themselves an empty storefront on the Lower East Side (bartering for the space instead of paying) and will be using their work to discover new bridges between the economic and the art worlds. The exhibit will be open from May 29th - June 28th. Other artists in other cities across the globe are encouraged to develop their own exhibitions as well. A website by Gregg Louis (www.anewcurrency.com) and blog have been set up to follow these artists and their work. Images and videos can be posted and viewed to see how different people from different places (St. Louis, Miami, Seoul and Taipei all have exhibitors thus far) interpret A New Currency.

Ultimately, the global, virtual and local take on A New Currency will be displayed at the Visual Arts Gallery (601 West 26th Street, 15th floor) from July 11th to August 15th. Visit www.anewcurrency.com or stop by 55 Delancey to see the exhibit.

Art and Urban Space: Rent, the East Village,

and the Construction of Meaning

ART AND URBAN SPACE

Art has an immediate relationship to urban space. From alternative, activist

art rooted in the neighborhood to prestige-associated art in museums and galleries,

art is spatially defi ned by its interaction with its setting, and implicated,

to varying degrees, in the culture industry. Artists are mobile on the spectrum

of spatially-defi ned prestige and value. From the space of anonymous, nonprofi

t, neighborhood-oriented cultural work to the space of the fame-, profi t-,

and institution-oriented culture industry, artists can hope to move, and this

hope often sustains their labor.

The value and meaning of art is contextually defi ned by its place in the

fi eld of display (neighborhood, alternative space, mainstream museum, gallery,

theatre, movie theatre, or DVD, among others). Thus, art is implicated

in “the processes of capitalist valorization,” even when presented as an autonomous

circuit for “the constitution of communities and collective subjectivities.”

1 Art-making is affective, immaterial labor—that is, “labor that produces

an immaterial good, such as a service, knowledge, or communication”

2—with its focus on “the creation and manipulation of affects,” and its

ultimately intangible products: “a feeling of ease, well-being, satisfaction,

A New Currency Art Exhibit

So I stumbled upon this exhibit on Saturday and totally loved it. It has some really interactive art on display that I think the even the most novice art lover can enjoy. These SVA students were crafty enough to convince the landlord to use the vacant store front as there studio space for absolutely FREE. When I heard that I knew I had to post them on the blog. By the way check out the Golden Girls display, one word Hilarious!!
So A NEW CURRENCY consists of 31 artists in cooperation with curator Dan Cameron. They will be hosting an exhibition in a vacant store front in the Lower East Side of New York City until June 28.

LES Store Opening, Closing Tonight

Storefronts on the Lower East Side are constantly changing. What used to be a cobbler's shop might now be a high-end boutique that later might become a pre-prohibition cocktail bar with an special "cobbler" concoction as a nod to the olden days. Anyway, tonight a new store is opening, but it's also closing! Yes, a comment on instability by a collective of artists. Stop by 55 Delancey Street from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight where 31 artists will be hosting an exhibition in a vacant store front. Read more about the project here.

New Occupant at 55 Delancey

Just over one year ago, the classic Lichtenstein & Co. signage at 55 Delancey was painted black, the windows scrubbed bare. In the interim, the vacant space fell into disrepair, and was plagued with plenty of broken glass, street stickers, and graffiti. And except for a new sidewalk out front and blue "for rent" advertising, progress at the site has been fairly minimal.

All that is about to change, though. Starting a week from today, A New Currency, an artist collective from the School of Visual Arts, will temporarily occupy the space for its work. The exhibition will last until June 28. After that, it's anyone's guess.

Lichtenstein & Co. is still in business, but now occupies a smaller space at 95 Delancey.

He escaped from a derailed train, a door-less plane, a bus crash, a car into flames, another 2 car accidents... then won a million dollar lottery

Here's the story of how the world's unluckiest man turned his fate upside down. Frane Selak, born in 1929, is a Croatian music teacher who used to be famous for his numerous escapes from fatal accidents:

In January, 1962, Selak was traveling via train from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. However, the train had suddenly derailed and plunged into an icy river, killing 17 passengers. Selak managed to escape, and only suffered a broken arm and minor scrapes and bruises.
The following year, while traveling from Zagreb to Rijeka when the door blew away from the cockpit, forcing him out of the plane. Although 19 others were killed, he suffered only minor injuries and had miraculously landed in a haystack.
In 1966, he was riding on a bus that crashed and plunged into a river. Four others were killed, but Selak managed to escape unharmed.
In 1970, he managed to escape before a faulty fuel pump engulfed his car into flames.
In 1973, another of Selak's cars caught fire, forcing fire through the air vents. He suffered no injuries save the loss of most of his hair.
In 1995, he was hit by a city bus, but once again suffered minor injuries.
In 1996 he escaped when he drove off a cliff to escape an oncoming truck. He managed to land in a tree, and watched as his car exploded 300 feet below him.

But then, in 2003, the heavens seemed to review his case: he won $1,000,000 dollars in the Croatian lottery!

The School of Visual Arts' MFA students are a tight nit group, perhaps since their studios are packed together like cubicles. Their graduation excitement could be felt at the Open Studios, as well as the close friendships and dialogue they have with each other. I went after the opening which made it easier to view the work.

Tre Chandler's (Landstuhl, Germany) showed an amusing video of himself playing different women characters. Without any costume he turns to the camera over and over again to say hello with his eyes and body language—while silly feminine character's names flash on the bottom of the screen. Chandler's thesis is a book of ridiculously punchy statements: “Explosive Galleria” and “Why did I do that? Never, ever read the press release.” Rebecca Goyette (Townsend, MA), of Dixie Missile Chicks fame, showed a wacky video of her romancing alover who happens to be an overstuffed dummy dressed in a tuxedo. She romances her man through his stomach-- she enthusiastically feeds him all sorts of heavy delicacies for him only to get turned on by the stripper she hires. I also enjoyed Seong-eun Hong's digitally manipulated images of art vistors in museum galleries. The museum goers are shown holding famous masterpieces while they grok at such things as soda machines.

Kahori Kamiya's (Nagoya, Japan) 3 minute split video, showed her as a conductor in her bathroom side by side a loop of found video clips of pop culture, including fashion vixens and uniform crowd gatherings. She seems to be standing up against mass culture. Vered Sivan's (Israel) installation incorporated dental floss into the walls, floors, in chairs and tilting back a desk—in mass quantities the floss appeared dainty and strong. It was inspired by her working for a dentist in Israel.

Jin Kyoung Bom (Seoul, Korea) cuts up and uses paparazzi pictures in a very technical and visceral way. Her way of keeping the paper format of celebrity images exacerbates the origin's falseness. In some images, she is wearing the printed images and is performing with them in a very personal and meaningful way. I was taken back by the nuance of Naoko Ito's (Japan) work. It took me a few moments of looking at the work of wood and bottles to really see the nuances. She had broken twigs displayed in jars which were stacked in the shape of the original branches. The books turned away from the viewer, with white pages adding to the natural vs order quality of the work. The only book showing had the title of “Silence.”

About P.1 and the revitalization of New Orleans:
Prospect.1 New Orleans has been designed to help reinvigorate New Orleans following the human, civic, and economic devastation left by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The long-term primary goal of the biennial exhibition is to redefine the city as a cultural destination, where the visual arts are celebrated and can once again thrive. Prospect.1 New Orleans aspires to initiate a new category of cultural tourism for the city, on a scale normally seen during Mardi Gras and the city's celebrated JazzFest.
